Culture
The Art Of Installation

"The whole point of collaboration is that you give and take from each other, and that's how you create things that are totally new."

 -  Virgil Abloh

-As far as I can tell, KC “perfect” is the first Black owned Art handling company in LA. Why did you start the company?

"Within art-logistics culture, the mean, (normalcy) is dominated by a “white male-normal” authority. As an art-handling employee, I was subject to those persistent assertions for years. When I began working in the homes of progressive collectors like Jesse Williams and Arthur Lewis who celebrated my subjectivity, it essentially opened the door to KC “perfect”. But ultimately, it was installing bluechip Art for Jay-Z that finally liberated my perceptions about the employee role I was assuming. He, I believe, purposely and publicly engaged me as superior to the subject position I had reflexively agreed to as an employee."

-There’s a bunch of Art installation companies out there. Why is KC ”perfect” different?

"Same reason Virgil’s ethos is important — liberating an additional version of normal and having the audacity to step out of traditional expectations to create a space to practice aesthetics. In other words, collectors…like us as aesthetic service professionals, enjoy some swag in the installation process. KC “perfect” provides that experience."

-What was your first installation?

"It all started in 2000 when I came to LA to go back to school for environmental design. Art handling got me through grad school. I worked for many of the usual Art logistics companies. I’d installed thousands of artworks, but it wasn’t until I began installing for LA collector, Steve Roth, that I began to understand my value and really begin the dance of Art installation. Mr. Roth was like my (NBA coach) Doc Rivers. The Art logistics industry operates within the same unspoken terms and conditions that fuel the social agreements that allowed former LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling to thrive for years. Mr. Roth leaned on my competence vs questioning it onsite. He entrusted me with his Art investments and the best practices to protect his Beverly Hills home. Those gestures went a long way."

-Tell us about your company logo.

"Virgil forever. Virgil Abloh’s assent into the upper echelons of design practice and execution are the foundations of how we do our business as KC ”perfect” and our logo is an homage to his legacy."
